Principal’s Update

14 May

Dear Summit Heights families,

We have had a very busy and jammed packed schedule since our last online update.

The student-initiated “Make a Difference” campaign (to raise money to help those affected by the tragic events that happened on Yonge Street) has been a meaningful and successful endeavor.  With your help, this initiative lead by three caring students in Grade 5, has raised $1000!  Thank you all for your help!

Earlier this month we held our annual Spring Open House.  Parents and families were invited to see and experience what our students are learning by visiting our classrooms, the gym and library.  Thank you to our staff for making our learning visible and thanks to the many families who took the time to visit our school.

Two weeks ago we held our annual SHPS track and field meet.  Our students competed to their best of their abilities, while having fun and enjoying the spirit of competition.   A number of our student-athletes then competed in their regional track meet at Esther Shiner stadium.  A huge congratulations to Kosta (shot put), Ella (long jump) and Caitlin (long jump) for advancing to the Conference Finals on June 4th!  Way to go Stingrays!  Special thanks to Coach Eisen and Coach Anton for coaching and coordinating this year’s track and field team.

Late last month, thanks to the ECO team, we held our last walk-to-school day.  To the surprise of many (or perhaps feigned surprise) our students participated in a giant flash mob on our school yard!  Students danced, hopped, clapped and jived to the music being played to the delight of all around.  A huge thanks to dance instructor Diana and Ms. Eisen for coordinating this very fun event!

Today we had our annual Grandpal day!  We had a great turn out of Grandpals visiting our school, who watched performances and participated in reading, learning and arts and crafts with our students.  It was a fantastic day of relationship building between our Grandpals and our kindergarten students.  Thank to the many Grandpals who attended today’s events as well as our school staff for preparing the performances.  A huge thank you to the parent committee of Tammy Vinokur, Alanna Silver and the many, many volunteers for the amazing work and countless hours of preparing in making this event happen – thank you!!!
