Principal’s Update (Sept 30, 2018)

30 Sep

Dear Summit Heights Parents,

We had a successful first month of our new school year.  September was a month of reviewing routines, school norms and expectations.  Students also performing a number of diagnostic assessments in various subjects, and started learning and demonstrating their learning of the curriculum.

By now, our staff have communicated with their students’ parents a number of times.  This communication varies in format from Google Class, online blogs, regular email updates, hard-copy news letters, agenda notes, monthly calendars, to name a few.  Please review the communication from your child’s teacher(s) to stay on top of past and upcoming events.

Any school is more than what happens in the classroom.  Our school had a number of events that took place in September.

In terms of athletics, we had tryouts, team selections and practices for co-ed cross country, girls’ soccer, boys’ soccer and touch football.

We’re really proud that we also have a number of extra-curricular clubs that have started up including the Robotics/Lego/Coding club with Mr. Chen, the Pathfinders club with Ms. Samson and ECO Schools with Mrs. Marchiori and Ms. Bates.  Grade 6s have also had a number of leadership opportunities including conducting the morning announcements on our PA system and lunch-time office helpers.

September 13th was the date of our annual New Parent Tea.  Parents ‘new’ to our school were invited to meet members of the School Advisory Council (SAC, aka: “Parent Council”), meet the school principal and other new parents.  This was a great opportunity to get information about our school and connect with others.

On September 20, members of our Social Justice League, with Mr. Chen, attended the WE Day extravaganza at Scotia Bank Arena.  The event brought tens of thousands of young student leaders to be inspired from world-renowned speakers and performers, all with the message of making a difference in our community, world, through changing lives!  The group of students, with Mrs. Mercer, Mrs. Samson and Mr. Chen organized our school’s Orange Shirt Day, which took place on Friday, September 28th.

On September 21 our grade 6 students attended a fun-filled, PHE related field trip to Downsview Park.  Hosted by Human Moves, which are based out of Downsview Park.  A huge thanks to parents Jill Kelner and Sandi Silver for organizing this physical and health education-based excursion!

On September 26th, we had our first Character Education assembly, for the character trait Respect.  With the guidance from Ms. Bernstein and Ms. Wasserman, grade 6 leaders planned and lead the assembly, and Mr. Valdoria’s grade 1/2 class performed a song about Respect.  Students from each class were recognized for their Respectful interactions with their peers and teachers.

On September 27, our annual Terry Fox Walk/Run was held.  This important annual event raises proceeds for the Terry Fox Foundation for cancer research.  While the total for the fundraising is still being tabulated, our students participated in the even with the understanding of who Terry was and what his Marathon of Hope’s goal is.  Thank you to Ms. Bernstein and Ms. Magnani for organizing this yearly event.  Thanks also to the many parent volunteers who helped with the walk/run.

September 27th was also the date of our annual Welcome Back BBQ.  Hundreds of students, parents, community members and staff came out to our BBQ, which also featured a photo-booth, lots of inflatable rides/activities, an outdoor dance with a DJ and dancers, face-painting and great food!  A huge thanks to parents Rachael Goodman and Michelle Freilich, as well as their team of parent volunteers, for this amazing event!

We also saw the completion of our roof re-construction project.  The workers finished packing up on Friday, September 28th.  While there is still some work to be done for the ‘flashing’ along the sides of some portions of the roof, our building should be leak-free from this point on!

A reminder to check out the Google Calendar (link along the right side of this web site) for dates of events that will be happening at our school.

Thank you for reading,

Mr. B. Mah,
Principal
