Principal’s Update

02 Feb

Dear Summit Heights Families,

January Events:

January was quite the challenging month thanks to the snow and cold weather.  Still, our school was busy with learning in the classroom, and events throughout!

During the first week back in January, the SAC organized lunch programs began.  Tov Li lunch also continued on the first Friday back (and on that note, if your child is participating in these fund raising lunches for the Grade 6 Graduation, please send them to school with reusable cutlery).  During that same week, SAC also organized a head lice screening for all of our students.

During January we had a number of school sports start up as well.  The school ice hockey team played its first two games.  While they played well, they’ve started the season 0-2, with 4 regular season games remaining.  The Jr. Girls’ volleyball team had tryouts and began practicing in anticipation for their February 11th tournament.  Likewise, the co-ed floor hockey team started up, with their tournament coming up at the end of this week.  Go Stingrays!

The ECO team hosted their winter walk to school day on Jan 17th.  Students and family members who walked to our school enjoyed a warm beverage (in a reusable mug) as a reward to walking to school.  We encourage everyone, who is able to reasonably able to do so, to walk to/from school on a daily basis.

The third week of January proved to be challenging because of the snow storm and following extreme cold temperatures, resulting in many indoor recesses.  Not only were buses cancelled, but the annual Grade 6 trip to the TDSB Sheldon Outdoor Education Centre was postponed twice (we had two different groups go up during the third week).  In the end, our students were able to go to the Outdoor Education centre, and they all had a great time learning through outdoor activities.

On Jan. 21, our Kids Lit Team competed in the TDSB tournament.  The weeks and weeks of preparing and practicing paid off, as the team finished second overall!  As a result the team traveled to Hamilton on Saturday, Jan. 26th to compete in the Canadian NATIONAL finals!  Our Summit Heights team was against tops teams from all over Canada, many teams having students in grade 8 represent them.  In the end, our team did exceptionally well, finishing 4th overall.  A huge congratulations to Koby, Daniel, Marcellus, Marley, Wyatt, all of the back-up team members and to Coach Greco!  We are so proud of you and your accomplishments!!!!

Important Reminders

Parents, when stopping/parking on Delhi, please remember to park in the same direction as traffic.  Likewise, do not part in the intersection.  Many students are dropped off on Delhi, as well as walk to school along that street.  Many student cross Delhi as well.  Cars parked in the wrong direction or in the intersection pose a serious safety concern for our students.  Please, for the safety of our students and all of your children, comply with the above request.

Please ensure your child has a pair of indoor shoes that they keep at school.  With the snowy weather, we are doing our best to keep the halls and classroom floors dry and safe, and wearing indoors shoes goes a long way in helping that happen.

Dental screening begins on Monday, Feb. 4th.  A notice was sent home previously about this screening.  If you want your child to not participate, please send a written note to your child’s classroom teacher.

Beginning on Mon. Feb. 4th, we will be asking all those in our building to stand for the Aboriginal Land Acknowledgement and Oh Canada.  This practice is expected of all schools in the TDSB.  If you are in our school during the morning announcements, we would appreciate your cooperation on this respectful practice.

Students in grades 2-6 will be completing a school-based survey this week.  The data from the survey will only be looked at by our school staff, which will help us be better informed about how our students feel about school.  The survey is on an online, secure format, and will be administered under the supervision of our classroom teachers.  Students in Grade 1 might review the questions and responses with their classroom teacher, if the teacher feels it works for their class.
