Principal’s end of February Update

09 Mar

Dear Summit Heights Families,

Hopefully by the time that you’re reading this, the weather has continued to be spring-like.  With warmer temperatures and more day light (thanks to the change in Day Light Savings), we hope that your child(ren) and yourselves have a renewed sense of positivity and energy!  Hopefully that translates to more engagement in class for your child, and thus better academic, social and emotional success!  And if that’s not the case, with March Break just around the corner, hopefully THAT good news brings a smile to your child’s face!

February had a number of school events.  On the 19th, we held our in-person portions of registration for new to Kindergarten (for children starting in September 2020).  We’re pleased to say that the number of new registrants is on par to what we had last year.

The month was broken up by the PA day and Family Day long weekend.  The PA day on Feb 14th was set aside for teachers to meet with parents to discuss progress.

We welcomed back Ms. Samson, who was on maternity leave, after the Family Day long weekend, and we bid farewell to Mr. Cabacungan, who was Ms. Samson’s long term occasional teacher.

On February 26, Edge Image was on site to take Senior Kindergarten and Grade 6 Gifted Graduation photos.  Some students in our regular Grade 6 program also took grad photos, at the request of their parents.

We have reminded students via the morning announcements and in class by teachers, of some general flu prevention points.  As you know, we follow the lead/direction by Toronto Public Health, and they have reminded all students in the TDSB the following as good preventative measures to help the stop of the flu:

  • Wash your hands properly (for at least 15 seconds) and thoroughly, especially before eating
  • Cough/sneeze into a tissue and throw that tissue away properly after, otherwise cough/sneeze into your sleeve or the inside of your elbow (and then wash your hands thoroughly as soon as possible)
  • Stay home if you are ill

The TDSB has sent a number of emails to parents about the COVID12 flu.  If you have not received these emails directly from the board, please send an email to Mr. Mah at bill.mah@tdsb.on.ca, and indicate who your child is, we will add your email to the TDSB contact list.

A general reminder that our bell times will change in September.  As previously communicated on February 26, starting in September our school day will start at 9:10 am, and the day will end at 3:40 pm.  Please see the previous post (or email) on this topic, for more details.

We want to extend our congratulations to Mr. Eschle and his Grade 6 class from last year, as they were awarded third place prize for the Canada-wide Young Writer’s Contest!  One of his students in that class, Amanda, was recognized as on e of the top writers in the entire completion!  Congratulations to the class (who are now Grade 7 students in other schools) and to Mr. Eschle!

Finally, a huge congrats to our entire school community as the official results have come back from the Terry Fox Foundation!  Our school raised a total of $5240 this school year for the foundation and the fight to cure cancer!  Special thanks to Ms. Magnani and Mr. Anton for organizing this annual event!
