Principal’s Update

01 Dec

Dear Summit Heights Families,

Happy December!  While we are just a few weeks away from the Winter Holidays, our school continues to be a busy and engaging place for our students!

There have been a number of amazing events at our school.  In the past few weeks our school community has raised funds and food for the North York  Harvest Food Bank, thanks to the organizing efforts of our Social Justice League!  Photo re-takes took place on November 16th.  On that same day and on November 17th we held our Parent-Teacher interviews as the Progress Reports went home that week.  The School Advisory Committee met on November 21st (a number of items were discussed, all in the support of student success).  Mr. Kellesis and Ms. Shapiro’s classes hosted the November Character Education assembly (on Empathy) on November 30th, the students did a fantastic job with their songs and skits!

This past week Mrs. Bower/Ms. Powell’s Kindergarten class made sleeping mats for animals, which will be donated to the Toronto Humane Society this Saturday!  Ms. Da Silva’s grade 3 students have been finishing up their 3D Geometry unit.  Mr. Chen’s Grade 5/6 class are working on “Angry Bird Projects” which involve understanding earthquakes, hurricanes and flight!  Ms. Bates’ grade 1 class completed a unit on Saving Energy (and their student work is displayed in the hall).

Ms. Mercer’s Grade 4 class recorded a class performance of  “Lost Boy” for the CBC Music Class Challenge.  You can view the video at https://youtu.be/T9nXKern0BU.

These are just a few examples of the great learning going on in our classes.

JungleSport
A reminder that JungleSport will be at our school this coming week (Dec 4-8th).  Funded completely by SAC, JungleSport is a fantastic opportunity and PHE enrichment program where our students will learn and perform climbing and traversing ropes courses in a safe and cooperative environment.   We have a special timetable, where every class will have a couple of opportunities to experience JungleSport.

A special thank you to a number of parents who have volunteered to help at lunch, as all classes will be eating lunch in their classroom this week.  Thank you to Stacey, Sandi, Kendra, Lauri, Naomi, Alexandra, Amy, Elizabeth, Jen, Attessa, Rachel and Racquel!

At this point, all lunch-programs will still run during this week.

School Photos – Receive your Orders by the Holidays
Edge Imaging has informed us that if you order your photos online (edgeimaging.ca) by Sunday, December 10th or order by phone (1-888-416-3343) by Friday December 8th, you will receive your photo order (via home delivery) by the Holidays.  If you are ordering by paper, please submit the order to you child’s teacher no later than Wed. Dec 6th.

School Library Books
Please ensure your child has returned all borrowed/signed-out school library books on Monday (Dec. 4th, 2017).  Our school library is going through a “revitalization” procedure later this month, and we need every book returned by Monday.  Thank you!

Boys’ Volleyball Team
Congratulations to our Jr. Boys’ Volleyball team who had a very strong outing at their tournament held at John Wanless PS on Nov 24th.  Our boys represented our school with skill, determination and good sportsmanship.  Finishing second, they have advanced to the Conference Quarter Finals!  Way to go team!

Thanks for reading!

Mr. B. Mah,
Principal

SHPS update

03 Nov

Dear Summit Heights Families,

We hope that your start to November was smooth, especially after the excitement of Halloween, which many families in our community celebrated.

Cart of Fun!
Parents, as we have done at school (in class and on the morning announcements), please remind your child(ren) to use the Cart of Fun responsibly.  Thanks to Ms. Eisen, her team and SAC, the Cart of Fun has been restocked with balls, hula-hoops and other outdoor toys for students to play with.  Students should only borrow and use equipment designated for their grade (by colour).  Equally important, we ask that students return the equipment they have borrowed, so that others can use it at the next recess.  These are the specific details from Ms. Eisen:

  • every grade has a colour and may use ONLY the balls of its colour Grade 1 – yellow Grade 2- orange Grade 3 – red Grade 4 – green Grade 5 – blue Grade 6 – purple If a ball of a certain colour is not on the cart, it is either lost, not returned or broken.  They may not take a ball belonging to a different grade.
  • for each grade, there is 1 basketball, 1 soccer ball, 1 utility ball, 1 football and 1 foam frisbee
  • if a student takes a ball from the cart, it is his or her responsibility to put it back on the cart
  • if he or she is finished using it and gives it to someone else, it now becomes the new persons responsibility
  • students must return equipment as soon as the first bell rings- not second…
