SHPS update

Dear Summit Heights Families,

We hope that your start to November was smooth, especially after the excitement of Halloween, which many families in our community celebrated.

Cart of Fun!
Parents, as we have done at school (in class and on the morning announcements), please remind your child(ren) to use the Cart of Fun responsibly.  Thanks to Ms. Eisen, her team and SAC, the Cart of Fun has been restocked with balls, hula-hoops and other outdoor toys for students to play with.  Students should only borrow and use equipment designated for their grade (by colour).  Equally important, we ask that students return the equipment they have borrowed, so that others can use it at the next recess.  These are the specific details from Ms. Eisen:

  • every grade has a colour and may use ONLY the balls of its colour Grade 1 – yellow Grade 2- orange Grade 3 – red Grade 4 – green Grade 5 – blue Grade 6 – purple If a ball of a certain colour is not on the cart, it is either lost, not returned or broken.  They may not take a ball belonging to a different grade.
  • for each grade, there is 1 basketball, 1 soccer ball, 1 utility ball, 1 football and 1 foam frisbee
  • if a student takes a ball from the cart, it is his or her responsibility to put it back on the cart
  • if he or she is finished using it and gives it to someone else, it now becomes the new persons responsibility
  • students must return equipment as soon as the first bell rings- not second…

Hallowe’en Safety Tips

Hallowe’en provides an opportunity for parents and children to spend time together creating costumes, carving pumpkins, planning trick or treat activities and participating in family parties. Hallowe’en is often a big event at schools and provides opportunities for parties, creative activities, art programs and impromptu history lessons. Hallowe’en is also a time for students, parents, and schools to take extra care to ensure safety and security.


• Children should NEVER eat any treats until parents have had a chance to go through them and inspect them. Parents should look for tampering of packages and discard any they believe to be unsafe or unknown.
• Have your child carry a flashlight.
• NEVER go into a stranger’s house.
• NEVER trick or treat with people you do not know.
• Trick or treat only at homes you know.
• Children should always stay in groups if no parent is present.
• Younger children should ALWAYS be accompanied by an older person.
• Accompany your child when trick or treating.
• If you can not accompany your child then know the route your child will take.
• Flame resistant (retardant) costumes are in order. Keep costumes short and remind children to stay away from pumpkins with candles in them.
• Remind children to stay away from pets they do not know.
• Remind children of road safety rules. Cross only at corners. Do not criss-cross the road. Go up one side of the road and down the other side. Never cross between parked cars. Walk facing on-coming traffic if there is no sidewalk
• If adults are driving their children, drive slowly, with lights on and be cautious when pulling to the side of the road.
• Children should wear their own shoes when trick or treating. Wearing costume shoes/boots can be dangerous and uncomfortable.
• Remind children that not everyone celebrates Hallowe’en, and to avoid any homes that have no lights on. Also remind children not to run through neighbours yards or gardens.
• With older children, be sure to know what other events (such as parties) they plan on attending.
• Set time limits when children should return home.

Letter from Director Malloy

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Over the past few days, there has been a very public discussion about the Enhancing Equity Task Force’s draft recommendations.

This Task Force was created because things need to change in our system to improve learning outcomes for all students and address disparities that impact our students.

I think you would agree that it is essential that the TDSB ensure equitable learning environments for each and every student. This means ensuring that all students have access – the same access – to learning, opportunities, resources and tools to succeed while keeping our high standard of excellence for all students.

After consulting with students, staff, parents and community members over the past year, the Task Force identified that some disparities exist between and within our schools and, while benefitting some students, may have inadvertently resulted in inequity for others.

The draft recommendations are not final and we invite your input on the recommendations. To be sure we get your feedback we have extended the consultation deadline to November 20. Your voice will help shape the recommendations that will be presented to the Board in December and, will ultimately make the TDSB a better place for all students.

One recommendation proposes phasing out specialized schools, such as a school for the Arts. I do not believe the Board has any intention of closing specialized schools so we have clarified the recommendation by removing the reference to phasing out specialized schools and will, in the revised document, focus on improving access to them.

Parents have also been concerned that specialized programs – such as TOPS or International Baccalaureate – would be phased out from within schools. This was not part of the recommendation and these programs will continue. What is clear is that the TDSB needs to find ways to expand the opportunities that these schools and programs offer.

Changes need to happen to ensure each and every student can achieve high academic achievement and success in school.

If you have not already, please review the Task Force report and recommendations and send us your thoughts and opinions. We value your input to make this happen. Please be sure to provide your comments through our online form so they are sent directly to the Task Force.

The draft recommendations will be available online for feedback until November 20, 2017.
