Welcome to another start to a school year!

25 Aug

Dear Summit Heights Students, Parents and families,

The entire staff at our school wish our community a warm, friendly and excited “welcome back to school”!  While at this moment, there is still a week of summer left, the staff have been busy preparing for the start of the school year.  We are excited to see our students, both new to our school and returning, on the first day of school (Tuesday, September 4th).

Staff will be in the school yard by 8:25am, greeting students, parents and families on the first day of school.  Grade 1-6 classroom teachers will be holding signs so that students can find their teacher.  Kindergarten students who are starting on the first day of school (or on any other day) should line up with their parent/care-giver at the front entrance of the school (pylons with signs will be out to help direct the line up).

If your child is bused to our school, we will have staff on site to receive them when they arrive on the school bus.  The students will then be asked to walk around to the school yard.

The first day of school can be a very exciting, memorable and momentous occasion for all involved.  Please understand, that for the smooth functioning of our school, parents and caregivers are asked to say their goodbyes outside (i.e., please stay outside during/after the students have entered the school).  If the weather is not cooperative on the first day of school, school staff will provide guidance about our indoor morning entry during inclement weather.

Parents, if you are new to our school please review the links on the right side of this web site.  The links provide a great deal of general information, routines, procedures and rules about Summit Heights.

If you haven’t already done so, please follow us on Twitter (@SummitHeightsPS).  Our Twitter feed is updated more often than our web site.  If you don’t have twitter, you can still see our tweets which are “re-tweeted’ on the top right corner of this web site.

We are also pleased to announce the following staff who have joined our SHPS faculty this September:

  • Mr. Valdoria (Grade 1/2)
  • Mr. Hunter (Gr 4/5 am Core, Resource)
  • Mr. Chen (Gr 4/5 Gifted Core)
  • Ms. Wasserman (Music am)
  • Ms. Bakhtiar-Nia (ECE)

  • Sept 7 – Friday File goes home
  • Sept 10&11 – Rosh Hashanah (classes continue as usual)
  • Sept 13 – Lice Screening

Principal’s Update

Sports Update

Last week, three students represented our school at the North Conference Track and Field Championships!  We’re very proud of the entire team and the coaching staff (Coach Eisen and Anton) – well done everyone!  At this meet, Kosta competed in the Grade 4 boys shot put and performed very well!  Caitlin competed in the Girls’ long jump and finished in an amazing 6th place.  Ella also competed in the long jump and finished 3rd overall – earning herself a spot at the TDESAA City Finals! Way to go Ella, Caitlin and Kosta!

This past Monday our boys’ softball team competed in their conference quarter finals.  The placed a very strong squad from Allenby (a school more than double our size) and played very well and competitively.  Congratulations on a fantastic season to the team and to Coaches Craze, Eschle and Kellesis!

Senior Kindergarten Graduation

This past Monday, our senior kindergarten students had a graduating ceremony on our front lawn.  In perfect weather, the students shared their memories and aspirations in front of parents, family and staff.  Afterwards everyone came inside for some refreshments.  Congratulations to all of our soon to be Grade 1 students, and to their families.  A huge thanks to the parents for organizing the refreshments.  Equally important, thank you to our staff Ms. Andrews, Ms. Bower, Ms. Marchiori, Ms. Powell, Ms. Kalimbet and Ms. Ferreira for their hard work this entire year.

Mock Ontario Provincial Elections (grade 4-6)

Last week, thanks to Mr. Chen and a number of student volunteers, our grades 4-6 students were able to participate in a mock election where students voted in a simulated voting station (i.e., portable 3).  Our students learned a great deal about the voting process and also learned about the actual elections that happened later in the same week.
