Principal’s Update

06 Jan

Dear Summit Heights Families,

Happy New Year!  The staff at Summit Heights hopes that you and your entire family had a fun-filled, exciting, memorable and safe holiday season.  We are all excited to get back into the swing of things as school begins on Monday, January 7, 2019 (this is a regular school day, with supervision in the yard starting at 8:25am).  With the start of a new calendar year, we hope that this year is the best yet for your child and family.  Going back to school after a long break can sometimes be a challenge for children (and some parents too!) – so let’s all be supportive and positive as school starts up again.

If you drive a vehicle to drop-off or pick-up at our school, please remember there is not stopping/parking in the accessible (aka: handicap) parking spaces unless you have a valid permit.  If you use Delhi and stop/park your vehicle, please ensure your vehicle is parking facing the correct direction on the street (some drivers have parked their car in the opposite direction).  Likewise, do not park in the intersection on Delhi (which is near the entrance/gate to our school yard).   In addition, please remember to come to a complete/full stop at the stop sign (vs. a rolling stop) for the safety of our students and school community, many who cross the street at this intersection.

We’re pleased to announce that the work on our school roof has been completed recently.  Workers were on site over the holiday break to complete the flashing along the sides of the roof.

As we are about to start classes again in 2019, lets look back at what happened in December 2018:

The month started off with the annual Scholastic Book Fair.  Organized by Mrs. Greco, assisted by staff, parents and students, this year’s fair was another success.  Thank you to everyone who purchased items from the bookfair, a portion of every sale goes directly back to our school library budget!

For the second year in a row, our school will have an ice hockey team!  This year, due to a lack of goalies, we are twinning with Willowdale PS to form a team.  Tryouts took place in December, with games beginning in January.  Go Stingrays!

Summit’s annual Festivals of Light extravaganza took place on December 13th.  Students in every class were involved with a class-based performance (singing, dancing, acting) or activity (Family Feud, math games etc).  We also have a Grade 6 bake sale fundraiser, SAC sales of newly branded SHPS touques, and fundraising for the North York Food Harvest thanks to our Social Justice League.  All in all, the evening’s events were a success!  Thanks to all of our staff, students and community for another fantastic Festivals of Light!

Just before the holiday break, the junior classes went to Beach Blast, an indoor beach volleyball facility.  Students and staff got to be active while playing volleyball in a fun environment.  At that same time, back at the school, our primary students assembled in our gym to perform part of what they did for the Festivals of Light.  Grade 1-3 students then participated in a fun, holiday-themed sing-a-long, complete with a dance-off!  It was a great last day of school before the holidays.

As you know, we have an up-to-date Google Calendar (the link is along the right side of this web page).  For your convenience, here are some dates of upcoming events:

Festivals of Light, Tov Li, Caretaking staffing update

13 Dec

Good morning Summit Heights families,

Festivals of Light
A reminder that this evening (Thurs. Dec 13th, 2018) is our annual Festivals of Light Each class will be hosting an event (including musical or dramatic performances, arts and crafts, board/math games and more!) this evening.  Most classes will host two sessions, so that parents can visit two different classes.

In addition, the Grade 6 students and parents will be hosting a bake sale in our gym.  Funds raised from this go towards the Grade 6 Graduation in June.

The Social Justice League is also accepting cash donations for the Food Bank (please know a $1 donation actually funds three nutritious meals for Torontonians in need!).  There will also be re-issued Summit Bakes for Change cookbooks and activity book packages for sale at the bake sale, with all proceeds going to the North York Harvest Food Bank.

Don’t forget the Scholastic Book Fair is also open this evening, hosted in our library.  For every purchase, a portion of the sales go directly back to our school library – so please consider making a purchase at the book fair.

Tov Li Lunch
Don’t forget that tomorrow (Fri. Dec 14th) is the next Tov Li lunch!  If your child is participating in this, please remember to send them to school with re-useable cutlery (spoon/fork).

Caretaking Update
Today is Mr. Caputo’s last day with us at Summit Heights.  We congratulate him as he has been promoted to the role of caretaking shift leader at another school.  Best wishes Mr. Caputo!
Our new Head Caretaker, Ms. Nagy starts with us on Monday, in addition, Ms. Bradberry is our new evening caretaker.  A warm welcome to both!

Thanks for reading!

Principal’s Update

04 Dec

Dear Summit Heights Parents,

Happy December!  While we’re looking at just two and a half weeks of classes before the Winter Break, November came and went – but it was a very busy month for our students at Summit Heights.

In early November, some of our core French classes learned the curriculum through a Pizza Nova workshop that came to our school!  Students learned about pizza making ‘en francais’, putting their vocabulary to the test.

As you know, students received their progress reports in mid-November.  These reports were to give a gauge of how our students are performing so far.  We use these reports to set goals and work with our students, and parents, to help develop next steps to further their learning and growth.  Many parents were able to attend the parent-teacher interviews to discuss these progress reports as well.  Please note, the Term 1 Report Cards (which will have marks for grades 1-6 students) will be sent home in mid-February.

You may have saw on Twitter that we also conducted our third practice fire-alarm drill last month.  We’re pleased to say that our students, staff and visitors exited the building in a calm and orderly fashion.  We reminded our school that the last person leaving any class or room during such a drill should turn off the lights and close the door, and for our students, any fire-alarm drill isn’t “over” until they are back in their class after the double bells have run to signal to come back into the building.

Thanks to SAC, Jungle Sport once again returned for a week of fun-filled climbing, swinging, and traversing-rope activities in our gym!  Our students, from JK to grade 6, were given a number of classes in the gym to learn about teamwork, trust, and building self-confidence while working through the climbing and ropes courses set up by Jungle Sport.  The gym was also open for adults in our school community to experience Jungle Sport!  A huge thanks again to our SAC for funding this fantastic event, and to Ms. Bernstein for creating the schedule during the week!

November 27th was the date of November’s SAC meeting.  A number of topics were covered, including a Treasurer’s report, Curriculum Enhancement Fund, revamped school logo, Principal’s report, Fundraising update and a summary of the Pumpkin Patch that happened in October.  We welcome and encourage all of our parents to attend these meetings.  The next meeting is Wednesday, January 16th, 2019.

As mentioned, with just a few weeks of classes in December, this coming month’s events will happen soon!  Here’s a list of what’s coming up in December:

Dec 6 – Character Trait assemblies

Dec 7 – PA Day (no classes)

Dec 10 – Pizza Lunch

Dec 10 – 14 – Scholastic Book Fair

Dec 13 – Festivals of Light (6-7pm) – more details to come soon!

Dec 14 – Tov Li Lunch

Dec 17 – Pizza Lunch

Dec 22Winter Holidays begin!

Jan 7 – Classes Resume
